Review: Sumimura Yoshimori is a high school teenager and a descendant of the Kekkaishi. The ability of the Kekkaishi are to fight off evil supernatural spirits known as Ayakashi using barriers. It has fallen upon two rival families – the Sumimuras and the Yukimuras to protect the land of Karasumori. Karasumori is a land of immense spiritual power which attracts ayakashi seeking to gain more power. It is the job of Sumimura Yoshimori and his neighbour, Yukimura Tokine to fend off the ayakashis and protect the lad of Karasumori. Yoshimori finds this job tiring and would honestly rather bake cakes for Tokine than lose sleep every night over demons. However, the promise he made a long time ago to protect Tokine no matter what drives him to become a stronger kekkaishi. The plot thickens as a mysterious organisation of ayakashis are conspiring to steal the power of Karasumori. Is Yoshimori up to the task of protecting Karasumori? And will he ever make that perfect cake he dreams of?

Kekkaishi is an interesting anime with a different twist on the supernatural. Yoshimori’s comic nature provides welcome humour amidst the sometimes serious underlying plot. The story is new, unique and well apart from the run-of-the-mill supernatural one would otherwise expect – particularly because of the interesting kekkai techniques. A good action-packed anime to watch!
