Review: One stormy night, a man named Nangou is immersed in a game of mahjong with some Yakuza men – desperate to win away his debt. However, as the night progresses, Nangou finds himself going deeper and deeper in his own grave. In one final desperate attempt, he thinks “someone save me – even if it is the devil!” At that very moment, a teenage boy walks into the Mahjong parlour after having scarcely survived a game of chicken. Soon, he displays a keen sense for gambling and Nangou hands over his game to the boy who learns mahjong minutes before he begins to play. On that fateful night, a legend is born as the boy, Akagi Shigeru, plays and gambles in a way that seems almost godly and inhuman to onlookers and his opponents. Akagi’s genius, his numerous death-matches with Mahjong masters, and his frightening sense make him a legend in the underground world.

I have to admit – I am completely clueless when it comes to the real game of Mahjong. I have a hard time following the Man Gan hands, Ten Pai and god knows what else that goes with a Mahjong game. But I was hooked. From beginning to end, Akagi is more than just about Mahjong. It is about the frightening insight a teenage boy has into the human psyche and how he can exploit and manipulate it. The storyline is filled with strategy after strategy, layer after layer that enable Akagi to predict the unpredictable, and to toy with the money and lives that ride on the game.

This series, however, is not for everyone. Since this a psychological drama, don’t expect action or adventure and the like. I’ve read a couple reviews of this and some love it while others hate it. True that it is unrealistic to be mahjong genius overnight. True that game after of mahjong can get tedious. On the other hand, how realistic is most of the anime we watch? Akagi, apart from the questionable animation style, has little else truly bad about it. This story focusses solely on Akagi’s genius in Mahjong and his descent into the Yakuza. From what I understood of the strategies being played, there wasn’t a time when Akagi ever repeated the same strategy in winning a game. Whether you know Mahjong or not, if you like suspense, intricate strategies, and understanding the human psyche Akagi is a good pick.

Review: Dark tanned skin, golden hair, and a toned body – Adachi Momo sure doesn’t have it easy in high school. Her appearance has nabbed her the false image of being a playgirl, untrustworthy and shallow. In reality, Momo-chan is just your ordinary high school girl with the crushes and secret loves as every other girl has. However, Momo’s ‘best friend’ Kashiwagi Sae doesn’t make things any easier for Momo. Forever jealous of what Momo’s has or likes, Sae’s sole goal is to get whatever Momo wants – including her beloved boyfriend Touji!! To add to the mix, the most popular guy in school, Okayasu Kairi has fallen in love with Momo and will not leave her alone. Will Sae succeed in breaking Momo and Touji apart? Will Okayasu succeed in getting Momo? When push comes to shove, who will Momo choose?…and will Momo reach her desire of finding true love?

Let me just say that if you like love triangles and complicated relationships, then you are going to love Peach Girl. This anime starts out with Sae the vamp and her conspiracies against Momo, and the trials Momo faces because of them – however, thats not all for 26 episodes. The story quickly progresses beyond petty boyfriend-stealing to look at deeper emotional questions all characters face in their relationships, how they change over time, and the choices they make for love. Peach Girl has all that a good romance anime takes: progressive plotline, moments of humour, and ofcourse, the reality of love; Bittersweet.

Take a peek at other high school romances:

Bokura ga Ita: Bokura ga Ita is a compelling drama about the budding, but complicated relationship between two high schoolers: Takahashi Nanami and Motoharu Yano. Both animes share similar complexities of high school relationships in their stories and in their portrayal of harsh obstacles keep the all-too-familiar bittersweet underlying theme in love.

Hana Yori Dango: Both Hana Yori Dango and Peach Girl have similar female leads who are given a hard time at high school. The story gets more complicated as feelings and relationships develop.

Lovely Complex: LoveCom is a heartwarming romance story of Risa and Otani – the tallest girl and shortest boy, also nicknamed the All Hanshin Kyojin. LoveCom concentrates more on Risa and Otani’s relationship and portrays different obstacles to this unlikely romance. It also provides much more comic relief than Peach Girl does.

Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou: Again about the trials of high school romance, Kare Kano offers a similar storyline to Peach Girl but fills the anime with much more comic relief throughout.
