Review: Dr. Tenma is a rising neurosurgeon working in a German hospital. Life is looking good for him - he is engaged to the beautiful daughter of the director of the hospital, his skills have made him well-known, and he is looking at a promotion very soon. One fateful day, two twins - a girl and a boy, were brought into the hospital in critical condition. The boy had a bullet in his head. Dr.Tenma, prepared to save the boy’s life with his skill prepared himself for the procedure. However, at that very moment, the Mayor was rushed into the hospital - critically ill. The director instructs Dr.Tenma to leave the boy and operate on the Mayor instead (for obvious political reasons). This is when Dr.Tenma upholds his standard of viewing all lives as equal and chooses to disobey the director and operate on the boy. The entire story of Monster hinges on this decision. The noble decision of Dr.Tenma to save the boy’s life turns into one of the biggest mistakes of his life. Monster traces Dr.Tenma’s journey to correct this at any cost.
Be prepared -Monster is deadly serious. It has a highly engaging plot and I found myself not able to handle more than three episodes a day! There is no comedy, there are no fillers, and there are no random side-stories. Every component has a part to play in the bigger picture. In all honesty, Monster can be terribly scary at times and the complexity of the story unfolded will have you thinking at top-speed to keep up! The animation is very good and the music is exceptionally fitting to the mood of the anime. Monster is serious, real, interesting and has real depth. One of the best psychological animes out there.
